New Property for the Branch
There is a continuing debate in the Union about whether we should be a stand alone union. Not beholden to Royal Mail for office space, access to phones and space for members to discuss their concerns. It is a costly exercise to go it alone and we were no different from many other Branches in talking about this issue from time to time.
Then came the “wake up” call. A strike at Exeter Mail Centre in August 2006 over the unlawful stopping of a rep’s pay led to a week long strike. Royal Mail responded in their usual friendly manner and booted us off site! The Branch had nowhere to operate from. In the end we came across a property in Okehampton Road, Exeter that the union Unison were selling.
The property was purchased and is now in the hands of the CWU Headquarters Trustees, but operated by ourselves. And the result is the best thing we ever did. Members and reps have a safe and secure place to meet and discuss concerns. Yes, the costs are high, but we try and make sure we spend your subs carefully to ensure this property is there for you and future generations of Postal Workers.
The grand opening was in February 2008 when National Officer Terry Pullinger came down to do the honours for us.
Below are the photos of the event and some of the work done on the interior of the building?
