Report from Reps briefing on Parcelforce Pay
Terry Pullinger gave a presentation on the business position and the background to the pay round discussions which had led to the deal been placed before the unions executive and now for members to vote and decide on. Terry also addressed a number of questions from representatives of the mechanics of the proposed agreement.
The offer in percentage terms backdated to the 1st April 2.6% will be paid as soon as practicable, if the deal is accepted by the membership. The ballot timetable is likely to be concluded by the end of June and if a yes vote is secured will be payable with July salaries. The additional payment £67 that will be paid by the end of September, when the additional list of joint objectives is formulated. This salary enhancement will flow through as this is a consolidated payment to SA overtime all allowances and pay ranges. The £600 lump sum is payable to all employees in post on the 1st April (pro rata for less than full time staff) irrespective of contractual status.
The bonus payment will be an enhancement of the First Time Delivery scheme and higher payments will be paid for reducing further the 739s returned to the depot above current targets. The scheme will not reflect any other depot costs.
The triggers for the additional unconsolidated payments of £400 (prorata to less than full time staff)) are not defined but are a clear statement of the intent to share the benefits of Parcelforce business savings with our members going forward.
Against the backdrop of achieving this negotiated settlement and the pay squeeze/freeze in all sectors of the industry. The settlements in other parts of the group.
The Branch has no hesitation in recommending the deal to its Parcel force members and importantly asks that you actively participate in the membership ballot.

JOINT STATEMENT PAY TALKS
Dear Members,Parcelforce Worldwide and CWU Joint Statement Regarding the Reward Package Negotiations
Following on from the joint statement released by Dick Stead, Acting Managing Director Parcelforce Worldwide and Terry Pullinger CWU National Officer on the 14th of April 2010, we are issuing this statement to apprise you of the current position in the ‘Reward Package’ negotiations.
Firstly we are acutely aware that Parcelforce Worldwide employees and CWU members are struggling to understand why Royal Mail Letters have concluded an agreement and we in Parcelforce Worldwide have not. We can only assure you that there are genuine reasons for that from a corporate perspective. Now that we are in a position to progress our discussions we can equally assure you that they will be conducted at pace and with the genuine intention of reaching an agreement.
These are very difficult negotiations given the economic and competitive challenges that Parcelforce face and our desire to balance that with the joint aspiration to maintain the standard of living and job security of employees. Equally whilst it is easy to run comparisons we wish to make it clear that we need a unique solution which reflects the competitive pressures and achievements of Parcelforce on its own merits.
It certainly will not have escaped your attention that the economy is only just showing signs of limping out of a very serious recession. In the context of the parcel market the recession has created overcapacity and severe pressure on price as competitors challenge each other for a reduced traffic level. In respect of Parcelforce this clearly challenges our ability to respond to the priorities of job security and offering industry leading terms and conditions whilst maintaining the sustained financial health of the company. Equally what cannot be ignored is the impact that inflation is having on our employee’s families and their standard of living.
It is then against that backdrop that our talks are continuing with the genuine and joint aspiration of exploring a number of potential benefits and operational changes which combined would reflect our key desire to ensure that you feel valued and rewarded for your continued loyalty and performance, and that Parcelforce Worldwide can continue to be competitive. Whilst there are currently clear differences between our negotiating positions we equally wish to assure you that regardless of the time taken; if we reach an acceptable agreement then it will reflect your past and future contribution.
We accept that people will continue to hold strong opinions about this situation however we believe that at the very least you deserved some explanation and some balanced understanding of the environment that the talks are being conducted in. We fully appreciate that we need to move at pace and assure that every effort will be made to conclude an agreement ASAP.
Whist the previously communicated colleague share dividend payment has not been part of these talks we can take this opportunity to inform you that the colleague share dividend payment of £400 will be paid in June salaries. Further details will be communicated later this week.

Update – 22 May 2010
Dear Members
The Colleague share has finally been confirmed at £400 (pro rata for part time employees) payable in your June salaries. I understand some members are frustrated that it has not been paid in May as expected, but this has been due to a number of issues including the Royal Mail letters Ballot. However, at least we are receiving it soon.
The pay talks are continuing. Unfortunately I can’t give you any further information but as soon as I have it I will let you know.
As some of you are aware, management have made changes to some routes without consulting me. I urge you to think carefully when requested to make changes and to please inform the manager that you require the CWU to be involved via a signed local agreement. This ensures that there is accountability for changes made.
Finally, thanks for your support and patience that you have shown through these difficult times.
Best regards
Tony Gadd

Information for Members – Pay 2009/10
I have attended a Regional meeting and been briefed by Terry Pullinger, CWU National Officer on a number of issues, including the matter of Pay.
The good news is that discussions are continuing with the Business. The Dental package previously announced will be available soon and publicly made available detailing how the scheme will work.
Everything is being done to ensure that if possible a negotiated settlement can be achieved that enhances pay and conditions for 2009/10.
I am sure that you will understand that in any set of talks there will be issues that the Employer will wish to discuss and these talks will continue at pace over the next few weeks.
The Colleague Share payment will be subject to normal payment criteria and is not affected by these talks. As soon as any detailed information is available I will inform all members.
